CHAMPS/Life Skill

The CHAMPS/Life Skills program focuses on five key areas of excellence in giving our student-athletes a platform for using athletic involvement as preparation for success in life. At Rice, these areas encompass our OWLS Programming (Opportunitis to Win, Lead & Succeed):

  • Academic
  • Athletic
  • Health, Well-Being & Personal Development
    • We will work to promote a balanced experience for the student-athlete within the Rice University environment and surrounding community.
    • We will provide an environment that promotes the development of values, goal setting and decision making while encouraging emotional well-being and personal growth.
    • Discussion topics and resources will include topics of need and interest for our student-athletes.
  • Professional & Career Development
    • Student-Athletes will be prepared for life after Rice University. We will:
      • Encourage the student-athletes to develop and pursue career and life goals.
      • Identify and explore career and post-graduate opportunities and resources with our student-athletes.
      • Work with on-campus entities to best meet student-athlete needs.
      • Develop continuing relationships with our former student-athletes to mentor our current student-athletes and provide opportunities for networking and career development.
      • Provide resources to navigate the graduate school application process.
    • We will provide assistance and guidance through the agent process for those student-athletes who have the opportunity to pursue their sport at a professional level. All agent registration and promotional materials will be housed in the Student-Athlete Development offices.
  • Community Service
    • Rice University as a whole believes it is important to establish a culture of service and an ethic of social responsibility within the University community.
    • The Athletic Department will work with their student-athletes, coaches and staff to empower them to become leaders in affecting social change and to work together to make our community strong through their involvement in athletics and to develop a lifelong commitment to service.
