March 14, 2007 With graduation rapidly approaching, senior Jason Mok is set to take all the skills he has acquired as a Rice triple major, four-year tennis letterman and volunteer, and become one of Tomorrow's Leaders. While juggling coursework in economics, managerial studies and sports management along with the busy practice schedule that is a part of being a member of a top-20 tennis program, Mok lends a hand on campus and in the community where he can. Last December, he and his teammates took a break from final exams to help sort food donations for the holidays at the Houston Food Bank. Mok has also participated in the Houston Rockets SAT Training Camp, where he spoke to 500 kids and their parents about preparing for life at college, focusing on the demands of being a student athlete. Back on campus, Mok is active in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, where he is a member of the Campus Relations subcommittee. As such, he helps develop and plan functions that promote activities for Rice students in conjunction with the athletics department. Currently, Mok is helping to spearhead the "2007 Take Me Out To The Ballgame/Tailgate" in conjunction with the university's Student's Association and the Rice Peer Council, which takes place on March 17 prior to the baseball team's game against Cal Poly. The event is aimed at Rice students and provides games (the area Mok is in charge of), food, prizes and live music. This year's Rice Scholar Athlete for the sport of men's tennis, Mok also stays on top of his work in the classroom. He has been an all-conference academic honoree the previous two years and has also been a member of the Rice University President's Honor Roll. He also worked a semester as a teaching assistant for a course on performance psychology, conducting group meetings. Mok has already accepted a unique opportunity with Ernst & Young: a spot in their YMP Program. This position will allow him to work on his MBA at the University of Virginia while also working in the Assurance and Advisory Division of the company. It was a summer internship with HSBC Bank Australia, Ltd. which "convinced me that I wanted to pursue a career in finance coming out of college," said Mok. "It is a good environment to learn a lot about the way businesses work, something that definitely interests me." Mok, who was born in Hong Kong grew up in Australia, plans to stay in the U.S. for the foreseeable future and is considering an eventual return to the business of sports. With the respect of his teammates, who elected him their team captain, and the solid foundation of the Rice experience to support him, Mok will surely be one of Tomorrow's Leaders where ever he lands. |
