April 22, 2008 From the time he first started playing baseball, Jared Gayhart had his eye on Rice. "Rice was almost like a home team for me only being thirty minutes from where I grew up," he recalled. It was only later, as he contemplated the choice of where to attend college, that he came to appreciate that Rice offered much more than the opportunity to take his baseball career to a new level. "I have had the opportunity to work towards a degree from here, play baseball for the best baseball program in the country, make many new life long friends, and just learn many things about life and myself." Gayhart is majoring in Sports Management with a minor in Business, but he finds many other subjects of interest at Rice. "Academically, I am most passionate about getting the most from each one of my classes that I can. I want to learn as much as I can about every subject and course I take because I am not 100% positive about what I want to do when I am done with school. I am interested in many things, but not one more than another." As with other Rice student athletes, Gayhart has to work hard to keep up with his classes and his sport, but when he has the chance, he enjoys being involved in community service. When the baseball team went to Nebraska for the College World Series, he had the opportunity to visit Boys Town, an experience he says he will never forget. He has also interned for Rice University in the marketing department and been actively involved in the Fellowship for Christian Athletes as well as a baseball bible study. Rice has meant a great deal to Gayhart. "Everything I have become involved in at Rice has helped shaped me into the person I am today. After this year, there is a possibility for me to be drafted in the MLB Draft. If this happens, I still plan to finish up school in the off season," he said. "It is also possible that I could return to Rice for my senior year. As far as the future goes, there is no telling what could happen with my life. Only God knows that for sure. My dream though is to one day play baseball in the major leagues and have a loving and happy family." Jared Gayhart is destined to be one of Tomorrow's Leaders. |
