Sneak Peek Ceremony Photo Gallery
Nov. 7, 2008 Just 16 months after a series of sledge hammers broke through a wall in the former Autry Room Lounge, symbolically kicking off the renovation of the Autry Court Complex, donors to the project walked inside of the renovated Tudor Fieldhouse on Friday night. Billed as a "Sneak Peek" in advance of the first basketball games of the season that will inaugurate the building next weekend, the ceremony and private dinner allowed those who had contributed to the long-dreamed initiative a chance to see for themselves what future Rice student-athletes will come to know as the norm: a state-of-the-art facility that will support their efforts both on and off the court. "We are so thankful for the support to so many former student-athletes who did not hesitate when asked to contribute to this effort," Rice Director of Athletics Chris Del Conte said. "This is a great day for every Rice Owl, and for every future student-athlete who makes the decision to come to Rice." In ceremonies prior to the opening of the building for tours and a private dinner, Rice President David Leebron, Board of Trustees Chairman Jim Crownover both thanked the many contributors to the project. Former Rice basketball players Bobby Tudor and Glenn Youngkin, whose major gifts spearheaded the project, also thanked the assembled groups of supporters prior to the opening of the building. The event coincided with festivities surrounding Homecoming 2008 and the launching of Rice University's Centennial Campaign, which has set a goal of raising $1 billion in the coming years. Greg Williams' Rice women's team will open Tudor Fieldhouse next Friday when they host Cal-State Northridge at 7:00. The following afternoon, Ben Braun will make his debut as head coach of the Rice men's team when they host Portland State at 3 p.m. |
