Owls Drop Saturday's Second Game Of Long Beach State Series, 3-2
Feb. 23, 2008
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- For the second time in as many games, the Rice baseball team dropped a one-run game on the road to a nationally-ranked team with a 3-2 loss to Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif. The Owls are now 0-2 to start the season while Long Beach State improved to 2-0. The teams play the finale of the three-game weekend series Sunday at 1 pm Pacific Time (3 pm Central). Long Beach State took advantage of a Rice fielding error to strike first for a run in the bottom of the first inning. After two quick outs, Forty-niner shortstop Danny Espinosa slugged a double to right-center. The next batter, Shane Peterson, reached on a Rice fielding error that should have ended the inning but allowed Espinosa to score from second base. The Forty-niners stretched the margin to 2-0 two innings later. Espinosa led off the LBSU with a solo home run to left field for his fourth hit in six at bats to start the season. Rice came right back and scored its first run of the 2008 season in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Diego Seastrunk led off with a single to left and he advanced to third base on a single through the right side by junior Aaron Luna. Seastrunk scored on a double-play ground out, but the Blue & Gray had cut the lead back down to one, 2-1. The Owls tied the game in the top of the seventh. Senior J.P. Padron singled to right field with one away and he moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Junior Jared Gayhart brought him home with his first base hit of the season that tied the game 2-2. Espinosa gave LBSU the lead in the bottom of the eighth. He led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shane Peterson. Devin Lohman singled Espinosa home and the Forty-niners moved back in front 3-2. LBSU's Bryan Shaw closed out the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning.
In two games on the west coast Rice pitchers have allowed just three earned runs in 17.2 innings. The hitters improved from Friday night's contest, with five-of-nine leadoff men reaching base. The Owls went just 2-of-17 when batting with runners on-base Saturday and the hitters were 1-of-6 with men in scoring position. Rice senior Cole St.Clair pitched well in only his third career start. He allowed four hits and no walks in 4.0 innings while striking out three. He was relieved by junior Chris Kelley and freshman Matt Evers. |
