Owls Complete Sweep At Whataburger Classic With 2-1 Win Over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
March 11, 2007
CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. -- Freshman third baseman Diego Seastrunk's RBI single in the top of the eighth inning gave the eighth-ranked Rice baseball team the go-ahead run and the Owls hung on for a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the finale of the Whataburger College Classic Tournament Sunday afternoon in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Owls completed the three-game weekend round-robin tournament with a 3-0 record. Rice defeated TCU 20-6, Texas Tech 5-1 and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2-1. Eight Rice players were selected to the all-tournament team, including junior Jordan Dodson as the tournament's most valuable player. TAMU-CC starter Omar Gutierrez held Rice to just one hit in the first three innings so the Owls manufactured a run in the top of the fourth. Junior Tyler Henley led off with a single through the right side. He moved into scoring position by stealing second base. Designated hitter Joe Savery followed with a double to left field for a 1-0 lead. The Islanders tied the game in the fifth. Martin Parra led off with a double down the left field line and Trae Williams singled into left to put runners on the corners. Rice reliever Ryne Tacker came in and induced a double-play ground out, but Parra scored to make the score 1-1. In the dramatic eighth, Rice pinch-hitter Jared Gayhart started the rally with a leadoff single through the left side. Brian Friday executed a text-book sacrifice bunt to advance him to second and Seastrunk's single to right field gave the Owls the winning 2-1 margin.
Tacker scattered four hits over 5.0 innings to earn his second win of the season without a loss. He struck out five as the Blue & Gray improved to 14-7 on the season. The Owls joining Dodson (of) on the all-tournament team included Joe Savery (1B), Aaron Luna (2B), Brian Friday (SS), Diego Seastrunk (3B), Ryan Berry (SP) and Scott Lonergan (RP). The Islanders fell to 12-9 overall. Rice has wrapped up a streak of playing seven out of eight games away from home. The Owls are back at Reckling Park for their next game. Rice hosts Cal Poly in a three-game weekend series, March 16-18. Game times are set for 7 pm Friday, 2 pm Saturday and 1 pm Sunday. |
