Owls Slug Season-High 17 Hits On Way To 10-6 Victory Over Winthrop

March 16, 2008

Box Score

HOUSTON -- Junior Jared Gayhart went 3-for-4 with a home run and a double to lead a season-high 17-hit attack, and senior left-hander Cole St.Clair came out of the bullpen to strike out a season-high seven in a 5.2 scoreless innings, to lead the ninth-ranked Rice baseball team to a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over visiting Winthrop in the third game of a four-game series Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park in Houston.

The Owls trailed 6-1 to midway through the contest, but rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another six runs in the seventh to reach double-digit runs on double-digit hits for the third time in the four-game series. St.Clair meanwhile held the Eagles in check for the final 5.2 frames as Rice staged the comeback win. St.Clair scattered two hits with no walks while fanning seven in his longest outing of the year at 5.2 frames.

Rice got right to work to put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Gayhart drew a one-out walk and he advanced two bases on a base hit by Adam Zornes. Gayhart scored on a Winthrop fielding error for a 1-0 lead.

Winthrop erupted for six runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. The Eagles collected five hits and took advantage of a pair of Rice fielding errors that led to four unearned runs.

St.Clair helped the Owls get out of the inning and the offense fought back for three runs in the fifth. Gayhart led off with a home run to right field for his second round-tripper of the year. Four-straight base hits led to two more runs. Zornes doubled and Aaron Luna singled into center to put runners on first and third base. Jordan Dodson and Rick Hague punched consecutive shots through the left side to score two more that made the score 6-4.

The Blue & Gray batted around in the seventh for a six-run inning of their own. Rice used five base hits, a pair of walks, a Winthrop fielding error and a wild pitch to take the lead for good, 10-6. Sophomore Diego Seastrunk doubled-in the go-ahead run and Gayhart doubled-in two more for good measure. Seven Owls finished with two or more hits, including Seastrunk who posted his 11th multi-hit game of the season and extended a current hitting streak to 19-straight games dating back to last season.

Rice improved to 12-6 with its fourth-straight win. Winthrop fell to 3-12 on the season. The four-game series between the two schools concludes on Monday at Reckling Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm.
