Baseball Team Opens C-USA Action With 6-1 Win Over Marshall

March 21, 2008

Box Score

HOUSTON -- The 11th-ranked Rice baseball team turned a pair of Marshall fielding errors into a big inning, and sophomore Ryan Berry led the way as three Rice pitchers held the Thundering Herd to a single run while combining for 10 strikeouts in a 6-1 Owl victory in the Conference USA opener for both teams Friday evening at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va.

Marshall quickly put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Adam Yeager drew a leadoff walk and an infield hit by Josh Valle moved him into scoring position. Year took third on a ground out and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Rowley.

That would prove to be all that Berry, a sophomore right-hander from Humble, Tex., and relievers Matt Evers and Bryan Price would allow the remainder of the contest. The trio proceeded to hold the Thundering Herd to just six singles the remainder of the game.

The Owls turned two Marshall miscues into a game-changing six-run inning in the top of the fourth. A leadoff walk to Adam Zornes and Thundering Herd fielding error put runners on first and second. Marshall retired the next two batters that would have ended the inning with the error, but a run came home instead to tie the game with the Blue & Gray still at bat. Consecutive walks to Jordan Dodson and Diego Seastrunk loaded the bases. A second Marshall fielding error scored a run and Derek Myers followed with a base hit thatscored two more. The ninth batter of the inning, Jared Gayhart, doubled to right to score two more and stretch the margin to 6-1.

With a big margin to to back him up, with Berry pitched a total of 6.1 innings. He scattered five hits and two walks while striking out seven to move to 3-1. Evers and Price both logged sound and solid outings to keep the heavy-hitting Herd in check. Evers struck three of the six men he faced in 1.1 innings. Price did not allow a hit or walk as the Owls won their seventh game in a row to improve to 15-6 overall and 1-0 in C-USA action.

Marshall fell to 8-9 on the season and 0-1 against the league. The teams continue the three-game C-USA weekend series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm Eastern time (6 pm Central). The series finale is Sunday at noon Eastern (11 am Central).
