Owls Complete C-USA Sweep of Memphis With 7-6 Come-From-Behind Win Sunday

April 6, 2008

Box Score

MEMPHIS -- The 12th-ranked Rice baseball team tallied runs in each of the last four innings, including a big three-run ninth, to claim a 7-6 win over Memphis Sunday afternoon and complete a three-game Conference USA sweep of the Tigers at Nat Buring Stadium on the UM campus.

After Memphis had built a 4-0 lead through the first five innings, the Owls scored in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth for the come-from-behind victory. Rice had three hits in the ninth, more than the team could put together in the first five frames, and a walk and a wild pitch also played a role to complete the rally for the team's third-straight win.

The Owls were down 6-4 heading into their last at bat, but Aaron Luna started it off by connecting for his second home run of the day to pull Rice within a run. Jess Buenger drew a one-out walk and was lifted for pinch runner Derek Myers. The moved helped tie the game as Diego Seastrunk followed with an RBI double to the wall in right-center that made the score 6-6. J.P. Padron singled deep in the hole on the left side to advance Seastrunk to third. Seastrunk then scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch. Rice senior left-hander Cole St.Clair held Memphis for a scoreless bottom of the inning and the Owls had escaped with a one-run win.

A come-from behind win seemed a little improbable just a few innings into the 12 noon start. Memphis jumped on the scoreboard for runs in the first and third innings and a two-run fifth stretched the margin to 4-0.

Rice put together a two-out rally for two runs in the sixth. Buenger drew aone-out walk and Seastrunk & Padron stroked back-to-back singles to score the team's first run of the day. A walk to Chad Mozingo loaded the bases and a second-consecutive walk to Jimmy Comerota forced another run home.

In the top of the seventh Luna blasted his first home run of the day well past the wall in left-center field. The blast made the score 4-3 and the eventual two-homer game gave the slugger 33 round-trippers in his career, moving him into a tie for seventh place Rice's all-time home run list with Jaques Landry.

The Tigers came right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. A walk and consecutive doubles by K.K. Chalmers and Chad Zurcher gave Memphis a 6-3 lead with just two innings left to play.

Seastrunk led off the eighth with a walk and a base hit by Mozingo moved him up 90 feet. Jared Gayhart dropped a two-out single into right field that allowed Seastrunk to score and cut the lead to two, 6-4. Rice completed the comeback in the ninth to improve to 23-10 on the season and 7-2 in C-USA action. In addition to Luna's two round-trippers, Padron finished the day with a total of three hits. Seastrunk scored three times with two hits and a walk.

Memphis fell to 11-19 overall and 3-6 against the league with their ninth-straight loss. Rice returns home to host longtime rival Lamar on Tuesday (April 8). First pitch of the game is set for 6:30 pm at Reckling Park.
