Baseball Team Thumps Lamar 13-5 Tuesday Night At Reckling Park
April 8, 2008
HOUSTON -- Senior first baseman J.P. Padron and junior leftfielder Aaron Luna both collected three hits as the sixth-ranked Rice baseball team coasted to a 13-5 victory over visiting Lamar Tuesday evening at Reckling Park. Padron tied his career-high with four RBI on the night while Luna blasted his fifth home run of the season to lead a 13-run, 12-hit Owl attack. That proved to be more than enough offensive support for Rice starting pitcher Mike Ojala. The sophomore right-hander improved his season record to 2-0 by holding Lamar to just two earned runs while striking out seven in a career-long 6.1 innings of work. Lamar came ready to play and quickly put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Anthony Moore drew a leadoff walk and scored after back-to-back singles by Brian Taylor and Steven Tucker. The Owls' answered with four runs in its half of the first, all scored with two outs already recorded in the inning. Diego Seastrunk singled to right with two away and Luna followed with a home run to center field. His fifth round-tripper of the year was also his third homer in three-straight at bat dating back to last Sunday's C-USA win at Memphis. Rice had a lead it would not relinquish, but the offense wasn't quite finished in the inning. Rick Hague walked and scored on a double by Adam Zornes. Zornes came home on an RBI single by Padron for a 4-1 lead.
The Cardinals came right back with a run in the second. Brent Harris doubled and scored on a base hit by Nik Gumeson to make it a 4-2 game. The two-run margin was short-lived. Rice exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to break the game wide-open. The Blue & Gray made the most of three hits, three walks and a Cardinal error to bat around. The big blows were a two-run single by Padron and an RBI double by Doug Simmons that stretched the margin to nine, 11-2. The Owls scored again in the fourth inning on Padron's fourth RBI to make it 12-2. Lamar got an unearned run in the fifth after a Rice fielding error and added a pair in the eighth off the Owls' bullpen. In Rice's half of that inning, Hague led off with a triple to right-center field and scored on base hit by Chad Mozingo for a 13-5 final. Rice won it's fourth game in a row behind double-digit hits for the fourth-straight time. The Owls improved to 24-10 on the season while Lamar fell to 20-11. The Blue & Gray next welcomes C-USA foe UAB to Reckling Park for a three-game weekend series from Friday through Sunday (Apr. 11-13). Start times with Blazers are set for 6:30 pm, 2 pm and noon, respectively. |
