Owls Rally Past UCF For 4-3 Victory Saturday Night
April 26, 2008
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The fourth-ranked Rice baseball team rallied for a run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 deadlock and then hang on for 4-3 victory over Conference USA foe UCF in the second game of a three-game weekend league series Saturday evening at Jay Bergman Field on the UCF campus in Orlando, Fla. With no shortage of drama, freshman shortstop Rick Hague line a two-out single to center field to drive in a charging Derek Myers from second base with what proved to be the winning run. The Owls still had to retire the Knights in the bottom of the ninth and senior closer Cole St.Clair was up to the task with the tying run at third base. UCF catcher Brandon Romans hit a double to the wall in right field to begin the ninth and a sacrifice bunt moved him just 90-feet from home plate. St.Clair came up big with a strikeout of the next hitter for the second out. The crowd came to their feet on a line shot to right field by Dwayne Bailey, but the ball stayed in the air long enough for freshman Chad Mozingo to make a catch just above the waist to end the game. Rice bounced back from a loss in the series opener and is now 33-11 on the season and a league-leading 14-3 in conference. UFC dropped to 27-17 overall and 5-12 in C-USA action. The Owls repeated something they did in game one, and that was score after putting the leadoff man on base. In the second inning Aaron Luna was hit by a pitch and he advanced to third base on a one-out hit by Jimmy Comerota. Luna was able to score on an RBI ground out by Diego Seastrunk and Comerota moved up to second. Chad Mozingo laced a two-out base hit up the middle to bring him home and the Blue & Gray took an early 2-0 lead.
UCF answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Eric Kallstrom poked a single to right and a sacrifice by Romans moved him into scoring position. He took third on a Rice wild pitch and scored on a base hit past a diving Comerota on the right side. The Owls got the run back in the fourth. Adam Zornes punched a base hit into centerfield to start it off. Comerota showed sacrifice early in his at bat, but had to adjust the strategy when getting a pair of strikes on him in the count. The sophomore from Missouri City proceeded to battle from behind for a base on balls that moved Zornes to second base. Seastrunk then stroked a single into left to bring him home and make the score 3-1. The Knights came right back with a run in its next at bat. Kallstrom walked with one-away and a wild pitch allowed him to take second. A hit by Romans put runners on the corners and an RBI ground out cut the lead to one, 3-2. UCF tied the game in the fifth. Josh Siebenaler drew a leadoff walk as a pinch hitter and moved up 90 feet on an errant pickoff attempt at first base. He scored on a double by Richardson to make it a new game at 3-3. Relievers Bobby Bell and St.Clair came in relief of starter Chris Kelley and proceeded to hold the Knights in check with a combined five shutout innings. The Rice staff finished with a season-high 15 strikeouts. St.Clair, now 7-2, allowed just one hit in 3.1 innings with no walks and five strikeouts to earn the in win in relief. The final game of the series is set for noon Sunday (Central Time). The game will be broadcast on the radio in the Houston area on KTRU (91.7 FM). |
