Hague Earns C-USA Hitter of the Week Award
March 24, 2008
IRVING, Texas - Rice freshman shortstop Rick Hague was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week, and Southern Miss pitcher Barry Bowden was named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Mar. 24) from its headquarters in Irving, Tex. Hague was one of the Owls' offensive leaders to help the team to an undefeated, 5-0 week that stretched the team's current win streak to nine-straight games. For the week Hague hit safely in every game to extend his current hitting streak to 10 games. The standout from Klein Collins High School in Spring, Tex., batted .500 last week, collecting eight hits in 16 at bats with two doubles and two home runs for a 1.000 slugging percentage. For the week he drove in eight runs, scored five times, drew two walks and was hit by a pitch for a .579 on-base percentage. Hague also executed three sacrifice bunts and made 17 defensive assists with five put outs from his spot at shortstop. The C-USA Hitter of the Week award is the first of Hague's career. Rice sophomore third baseman Diego Seastrunk shared the Hitter of the Week award on March 3. Bowden was strong against No. 16-ranked UCF in the C-USA opener on Friday night, striking out 14 Knights in route to his fourth victory of the season. Bowden allowed only one run through eight innings and two runners left on base scored after he exited the game in the ninth inning. The Owls' baseball team next faces longtime rival Texas State on the road in San Marcos on Tues. (Mar. 25). The first pitch with the Bobcats is slated for 6:30 pm. Rice then meets crosstown rival Houston at UH's Cougar Field on Wednesday (Mar. 26) in a 6:30 pm start time. The Blue & Gray is back home at Reckling Park for a three-game C-USA weekend series against Southern Miss from Friday through Sunday (Mar. 28-30).
