In his third year at Rice University as director of basketball operations is former college basketball all-America and NBA professional, Shawn Respert. In 2003-04, Respert served as an assistant volunteer basketball coach at Prairie View A&M. He also has been an assistant coach with the Imola Basketball Club (Italian League) and the Komfort Kronopolus Basketball Club (Polish League). A native of Detroit, Respert was the number-eight overall pick by Portland in the 1995 NBA draft after playing four years at Michigan State. For the Spartans, Respert scored 2,531 points (21.3 ppg) to rank second all-time in the Big Ten Conference and he is first all-time with 1,545 points in Big Ten Conference games only. After his senior season, he was an unanimous first team all-America and was named the Big Ten Player of the Year with a 25.6 scoring average. Respert earned his B.A. degree in communications from Michigan State in May 1995. Upon playing four and one-half years (1995-2000) in the NBA with Milwaukee, Toronto, Dallas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, Respert played professionally in Europe (1999-2003) with Stargard, Imola, Near East, Milano, and Olympiakos. He was also a member of the USA Basketball Team at the Goodwill Games and the World University Games. Respert, a cancer survivor, is heavily involved in speaking to various cancer clinics and cancer survivor support groups.
