Almond Named to Wooden Award Top 50
Oct. 25, 2006 Rice University senior basketball player Morris Almond is one of 50 players selected as candidates for the 2006-07 John R. Wooden Award All-American Team and for the The John R. Wooden Award, which is presented annually to the outstanding collegiate basketball Player of the Year. This is the first time since 1982, when Ricky Pierce was a member of the Wooden Award All-American Team, that a Rice Owl basketball player has been recognized by the Wooden Award Selection Committee. Furthermore, Almond is the only player from Conference USA to be selected in the top 50. In January, the Wooden Award committee will release the midseason top 30 followed by the national ballot in early March. On Tuesday, March 27, the 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. The 2007 Award ceremony, which will include the presentation of the Men's and Women's Wooden Award, the Wooden Award All-American Teams, and the Legends of Coaching Award to recipient Gene Keady of Purdue University, will be held at The Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 7, 2007. The top five male and female finalists will be invited to Los Angeles for the awards ceremony and will receive a contribution from The Los Angeles Athletic Club for their university's general scholarship fund.
