David Beaty enters his second season as the Owls' wide receivers coach. Under Beaty's guidance, the Owls' personnel who were primarily recruited for an running attack made a smooth transition to the new passing attack. Five Owls caught at least 20 passes on the season, headed by Biletnikoff Award finalist Jarett Dillard, who smashed every Rice single-season receiving record. The 36-year-old Garland native came to Rice after a highly-successful tenure as the head football coach at MacArthur High in Irving. He was 33-11 in four years with the Cardinals, winning district titles in 2004 and `05. In 2001 in his first head coaching position, he led North Dallas High to a 6-4 record. He previously was an assistant coach under Joe Martin at Garland High (1997-2000), helping the Owls to the 1999 Class 5A Division II state title. His first coaching position was as an assistant under Ronnie Mullins at Naaman Forest High in Garland. An all-district football and soccer player at Garland High during his schoolboy days, he continued his playing career at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., where he captained the football team in 1992-93. He earned his B.A. in history/ education from Lindonwood in 1994. Beaty and his wife Raynee, have two daughters: Averie (7) and Alexa (1). |
