Rice-- Heads into spring looking to solidfy his role on the defensive line.
2008: Contributor at defensive end who enjoyed productive efforts when not sidelined by injuries... Missed most of fall camp while recuperating from off-season surgery, but was able to play in the opener vs. SMU... Credited with his first career tackle against the Mustangs.... Credited with a career-best three tackles at Memphis, including a stop of quarterback Will Hudgens on the final play... Matched that total the next week in his first career start vs. Vanderbilt... Broke up passes vs. North Texas and Southern Miss... Suffered a strained calf muscle and missed the final four regular season games, but returned to play in the Texas Bowl. 2007 Made his debut against Baylor... missed the Texas Tech, Texas and Southern Miss games with an injury, returned to action against Memphis, but suffered a second injury and missed the rest of the season... Named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, finishing his first year on campus with a GPA of better than 3.0. High School -- 2007 graduate of Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas... Unanimous all-District 9-5A selection and team defensive MVP for coach Jim Ledford.... Berkner reached the third round of the state playoffs... Credited with 80 tackles on the year, including 14 for loss (five sacks) and nine passes broken up... Listed on Dave Campbell's Texas Football Top 300 heading into the year at tight end... Also competed in track and was a regional qualifier in the discus... Member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta math society... First-team academic all-state selection... Involved in his school's student advisory council... Also visited Houston before committing to Rice.
