Heard And Colwick Highlight Weekend Efforts
March 23, 2008
Bubba Heard streaked to an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 400 meters, while Jason Colwick set a personal record while also qualifying for regionals in the pole vault, to highlight a weekend of action for the Rice Owls men's track and field team. Heard, who had not run the 400 in competition since his freshman season of 2005, streaked to a victory at the 57th TSU Relays in a personal record clocking of 46.92, over a second faster than his qualifying mark of 48.28. Colwick cleared 5.35 meters (17-06.50) to match Maston Wallace of Texas, who was third at the NCAA Indoor meet, for the top vault at the Texas Invitational at Austin. Heard was one of three Owls to earn a qualifying mark at the TSU Relays. Senior Omar Wright was the top collegiate finisher with a high jump of 2.10 meters (6-10.75) to qualify for regionals. Freshman Ugo Nduaguba won the triple jump with a qualifying mark of 15.23 meters (49-11.75). Freshman Clay Baker was the top collegian in the shot put with a best throw of 15.69 meters (51-05.75). He finished second overall to current Rice volunteer coach Luke Stadel (16.92 meters). Baker finished fourth in the hammer throw, but set a school record with his toss of 47.37 meters (155-05). Fellow freshman William Meyer was fith in the shot (14.73 meters/48-04.00) and seventh in the hammer (41.20 meters/135-02). Senior sprinter Jon Turner was fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.0 after qualifying first with a 10.87 clocking in the prelims. He came back to finish sixth in the 200 (22.05).
The Owls will be at home next week, competing in the 26th annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic, March 28-29 at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium.
