LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Rice freshman guard D'Frantz Smart scored a career-high 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and passed out six assists, but the Lady Owls came up just short in a late second-half rally and fell to Arkansas-Little Rock 56-53 Saturday evening in a road game.

Smart posted a new career-high, her second in as many games after scoring 17 in a home win over Furman on Tuesday. The rookie from Chicago, Ill., was the only Lady Owl in double-figures as the Blue & Gray fell in its first road game of the season and for only the second time in five games.

Rice went on a 10-4 run over the final four minutes of the contest in an attempt to rally from a 52-43 deficit, but the Owls did not help themselves with 27.6 percent shooting in the second half. It was almost the opposite of the first half when Rice was 13-of-26 from the floor to take a seven-point lead, 31-24, into the locker room at halftime.

U.A.L.R. patiently chipped away at the lead before moving in front, 38-37, with just over 11 minutes in regulation. The Trojans then went on a 14-6 run to stretch the margin to nine before the Owls tried their final rally. Rice sophomore forward Morgan Mayse finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Tara Watts had eight points and five rebounds. Rice out-rebounded U.A.L.R. 35-6 on the Trojans' offensive glass but the Owls gave up a total of 16 points on 22 turnovers.

The Trojans' Chasity Reed led all players with 22 points and 12 rebounds. UALR imprived to 4-1 on the season.

The Lady Owls return home for their next game. Rice hosts longtime rival Texas-Arlington at the new Tudor Fieldhouse on Saturday (Dec. 6) at 5:30 pm.
