Women's Hoops Meet East Carolina in C-USA Tournament
March 6, 2008
• Championship Central HOUSTON - The Rice women's basketball team takes on East Carolina Thursday evening at UCF Arena to conclude the opening round of the C-USA Tournament. The winner advances to face top-seed and No. 18/23 UTEP (25-2, 16-0 C-USA) in the quarterfinals. The Owls (13-17, 6-10 C-USA) are coming off a 69-62 Senior Day win over East Carolina where Valeriya Berezhynska compiled 23 points to go along with 19 rebounds. Tara Watts and Kadie Riverin added 14 and 10 points as the Owls used a 26-6 run to overcome a 10-point second half deficit. "Our main focus this week at practice has been to keep our players confident but not too overconfident heading into this game," head coach Greg Williams said. "East Carolina is a very formidable opponent who knocked us out of the tournament last year." ECU (13-16, 7-9 C-USA) has lost three straight decisions after winning seven of nine games. A pair of All-Conference USA Second Team picks, LaCoya Terry and Jasmine Young, fuel a very talented Pirate backcourt. Terry averages 15.5 points per game and is connecting on 42.2 percent of her shots. She poured in league-high 35 points in an 85-82 victory over UAB (Feb. 21) but was held to a 3-for-12 shooting clip in Saturday's game.
In addition to her 14.3 points, Young distributes 6.43 assists per game. Nicole Days anchors the interior securing 7.8 rebounds to go along with 6.9 points per game. Tip-off against ECU is slated for 7pm CT. KTRU 91.7 FM and RiceOwls.com will have all of the action live with the pregame show beginning at 6:45pm CT. RiceOwls.com also will provide live stats for free via GameTracker.
The series is all square at 2-2, but the Pirates emerged with a 79-70 win in last year's C-USA Tournament final. Rice fought back from an early 14-point hole in the first half. Krystal Frazier scored a career-high 27 points, while Lauren Neaves compiled her 51st career double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. The Owls carried a 36-34 edge into the locker room and built a 12-point advantage of their own in the opening minutes of the second half. ECU used a strong inside game to go along with tough offensive play from Jasmine Young, who paced the Pirates with 23 points. Impris Manning chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Pirates secured its first NCAA Tournament berth in 25 seasons. Turn to page seven for a full recap and box scores from the two teams previous meetings.
