Los Angeles, Calif. -

Box Score

Krystal Frazier scored a game- and season-high 22 points and Rice went on an 11-0 run to open the second half as the Owls downed Loyola Marymount 80-65 at Gersten Pavilion Monday night.

Frazier shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 10 of 20 shots, including two three-pointers, and helped the Owls overcome a 38-35 halftime deficit. Kadie Riverin added a season-best 16 points, five assists and four steals, and Lauren Neaves and Valeriya Berezhynska chipped in 12 each as Rice improved to 4-4 on the year. With the loss, Loyola Marymount dropped to 3-7.

"We knew this would be a very tough game on the road," said Rice head coach Greg Williams. "They have some tremendous shooters and they love to run up and down the court and challenge you to stay with them. Krystal and our other guards played some great defense on their shooters and didn't allow them to get off a lot of easy shots."

The Lions' Amanda Patton entered the game as the NCAA's best three-point shooter at 57.8 percent, but Rice held her to only two of five from long distance and she could manage only nine points. Ashlee Dunlap and Amanda DeCoud led Loyola Marymount with 13 points each, and Dunlap grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Rice spotted LMU an early 6-0 lead before getting in the flow and the teams waged a see-saw battle in the first half. The Lions had their biggest lead at eight points on a trey by Bianca Ziemann with 9:55 to go in the first period, but Latrice Elder hit a lay-up and a free throw to bring Rice back within five.

Neaves tied the game at 28 on a short jumper with 4:17 to go before another Bianca Ziemann three-pointer gave the Lions a six-point edge. Frazier hit a trey at the buzzer to send the Owls into the locker-room down by three.

Frazier put the Owls ahead for the first time on a jumper with 18:44 left in the game, and then she added a pair of lay-ups and Riverin tossed in a trey and a lay-up to put Rice up 48-40 with 15:42 to go. Neither team scored for the next 3:27, but Tiffany Loggins broke the deadlock with a lay-in for the Owls and followed up with a turnaround jumper to make it 52-40.

Dunlap scored for the Lions with 8:48 remaining to cut the Rice lead to 12 at 56-44, before the Owls went on a 16-0 run over the next five minutes to put the game nearly out of reach. Loyola Marymount worked back with a nine-point unanswered run to make it 74-56 with 2:16 to go and the Owls held on from that point despite some aggressive defense by the Lions.

Rice returns to action Thursday, hosting Wake Forest at 7 pm at Autry Court.
