Swimmers Fall To Houston, New Mexico State, Thursday In Double-Dual Meet
Nov. 6, 2008
HOUSTON -- The Rice foursome of Angela Wo, Pam Zelnick, Alexandra Ernst and Carlyann Miller combined to win the 400-yard medley relay with a season-best time of 3:56.99, but the Owl swim team was defeated in both ends of a double-dual meet Thursday evening across town at the UH Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium. The University of Houston defeated Rice by a final team score of 173-121 and New Mexico State slipped past the Owls 151-143. The Owls improved more than two seconds off their previous season-best time in the 400-medley to touch in first place at 3:56.99. As the opening race in the 16-event double-dual meet, the Blue & Gray had the early lead but it proved to be the only victory of the night. Houston won 11 events and New Mexico State won the other four. Both the Cougars and the Aggies field springboard diving teams (where Rice does not) that added an automatic 32 points to the opposition's team total. Though not happy with the final score, Rice head coach Seth Huston saw a host of performances, like the medley relay, where the Owls improved on their previous times. "You have got to give Houston and NMSU credit, they came ready to swim fast," coach Huston said. "We had some positives and swims we can build-on, but we showed we are a little fatigued right now from what we've been doing recently in training. We want to win meets and get accustomed to winning races, but we're not going to panic and suddenly change what we're doing. We're going to stay on-target with our season-long plan for training."
The Owls posted a total of six second place finishes on the night. Freshman Shelby Bottoms was second in both the 200-freestyle (1:52.53) and 200-individual medley (2:09.19) while junior Justine Lin was second in the 200-backstroke with a season-best 2:05.33. Distance specialists Caitlin Warner and Nicole Delaloye were second and third, respectively, in the 1,000-freestyle. Erin Mattson and Alexandra Ernst were second and third, respectively, in the 100-butterfly. Mattson also looked sharp on the second leg of the Owls' 400-free relay that placed second overall with season-best mark of 3:30.67. The Rice swimmers will be right back across town at UH for its next competition on Nov. 14-15. The Owls swim in the annual Phill Hansel Duals, a five-team two-day meet at the Cougars' Rec Center Natatorium. |
